Mpox- Products Effective against Enveloped Viruses

Mpox belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus and is part of the Poxiviridae family. It is an enveloped virus as is Coronavirus. There are two distinct clades of the mpox family: clade I and clade II. 

On the 14^th of August WHO declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern. Mpox can be transmitted to humans through close contact with someone who is infectious, with contaminated materials (such a clothing or linen) or with infected animals.

Mpox is relatively easy to destroy outside of the body and with good hand hygiene, to prevent further spread of the disease and good cleaning and disinfection procedures, mpox can be safely removed from contaminated surfaces.

Surfaces

Government guidelines recommend surfaces are cleaned with detergent followed by disinfection.

Evans

Recommended products include Evans Protect, Est-eem, EC4 Sanitiser and EC9 Washroom. These products have all been tested and pass EN16777 and EN 14476, which uses a Covid surrogate virus to determine the activity against enveloped viruses.

Hand Hygiene

Regular hand washing with soap and water or the use of hand sanitiser for 20-30 seconds is internationally recognised as a key intervention in preventing spread of infection.
